U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated Jonathan Gould to serve as the Comptroller of the Currency at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) for a five-year term. Gould, a former cryptocurrency company executive, previously served as Chief Legal Officer at blockchain infrastructure company Bitfury and had also served as Senior Deputy Comptroller and Chief Counsel at the OCC during the first term of the Trump administration.
Kristin Smith, CEO of the Blockchain Association, stated that Gould's experience in the crypto industry will help him effectively lead the OCC. As the primary banking regulator in the United States, the OCC is responsible for regulating banks that are members of the Federal Reserve System, such as JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America.
The OCC plays a crucial role in maintaining the stability and integrity of the U.S. banking system. Gould's appointment comes at a time when the crypto industry is seeking greater regulatory clarity and acceptance from traditional financial institutions. Gould's background in both the crypto industry and the OCC may help bridge the gap between the two sectors and promote innovation in the financial services sector.
Gould's nomination is subject to Senate confirmation. If confirmed, Gould will take over from Joseph Otting, who stepped down from the position in January 2021. Gould's appointment is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the OCC and help shape the future of banking regulation in the United States.
