Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company, has announced an experimental new AI-driven search feature called "AI Mode," which allows users to present multifaceted queries and receive AI-compiled comprehensive answers. This development suggests significant potential changes to Google's core search product. According to Google's VP of Search Products, Robby Stein, AI Mode operates multiple related searches in the background, anticipating user interest and consolidating the results into coherent responses, making it superior for complex queries than traditional keyword searches.
The AI Mode will exist as a separate option alongside the current Google Search homepage. Stein noted initial tests indicate that queries entered in AI Mode are twice as long as those in standard searches. This feature integrates information from across the internet and Google's proprietary data, and supports text, image, and video analysis.
Built on Google's new Gemini 2.0 AI model, AI Mode provides enhanced comprehension and reasoning capabilities. Initially, it will be accessible to subscribers of Google's AI services, hinting at a shift in Google's longstanding free-access search model towards possible monetization.
This shift appears as a strategic response to competition from OpenAI's ChatGPT and other AI search startups like Perplexity and Anthropic. Historically, Google has avoided major modifications to its search products, which accounted for nearly 60% of total revenue in the previous quarter. However, ChatGPT's rising popularity has prompted users to engage more naturally with AI, urging Google to expedite advancements in AI search functionalities.
Google's key competitive advantage in the search arena is its vast knowledge base, global shopping data, and access to the latest web content. However, the integrated approach of AI search raises concerns about external web traffic distribution.
In traditional search models, users click through to websites for complete information. Conversely, AI Mode might provide answers directly on the search results page, reducing the necessity for webpage visits, causing unease among content creators worried about diminishing site traffic and ad revenue opportunities.
In response to these concerns, Stein assured that AI Mode still grants opportunities for websites to rank and demonstrate their value to more users. Nevertheless, Google's AI search has amplified apprehensions among some site owners, particularly those reliant on search engine-generated traffic, such as news, blogs, and independent content platforms.
Apart from introducing AI Mode, Google has enhanced its AI Overviews by incorporating the latest Gemini language model version. This upgrade aims to bolster search capabilities in fields like mathematics and programming and expand access to teenage users.
This initiative seeks to refine AI's ability to answer complex questions, elevate user search experiences, and reinforce Google's lead in the AI-powered search market.
