Gasoline prices are following oil prices upward, with the average pump price jumping from $2.92 a month ago to $3.56, according to AAA. The wholesale price of gas is around $2.70, and the average spread between wholesale and retail prices during the last year has been about a dollar. Trump said the US government would offer insurance, but the details seem to be lagging. So most shippers in the region are waiting for hostilities to end. With storage tanks filling up, some producers, such as Kuwait and the UAE, have cut production.If US forces in the Gulf are able to assure safe passage through the strait, oil prices will probably drift back to the $60 range they were at a month ago. But that would probably require Iran to swear off any tanker attacks, as part of a case-fire deal or some other arrangement. The biggest unknown is if Iran will do that, and when.Trump’s biggest political concern this year is obviously the midterm elections in November. The US Energy Information Administration just raised its forecast for Brent crude, the global standard, to $95 per barrel through mid May, to $80 per barrel over the summer, and to $70 by the end of the year. Its prior forecast was $64 throughout 2026.Brent at $95 correlates with gasoline prices of roughly $4 per gallon. When Brent is $80, gas is around $3.70. If that scenario unfolds, gas prices will be nearly a dollar higher than the start of the year as the midterms draw near. Rising oil prices also raise transportation costs in many industries, pushing overall inflation higher.Trump already faces angry voters frustrated with the high cost of housing, food and electricity. Trump promised to lower prices when he ran for president in 2024, and falling gas prices were the most tangible form of relief voters had seen during his presidency. Until now.Trump message to voters? “<a href="https://x.com/TrumpDailyPosts/status/2030870797976518762?s=20" target='__blank'>Don’t be a panican</a>.” That’s what he posted on social media on March 9, adding, “there is not an oil shortage. Prices will drop again soon.” He pointed out that the United States is supposed to receive 200 million barrels of oil from Venezuela, under a deal he made earlier this year.That might sound like a lot, but 200 million barrels is only 10 days’ supply in the United States. And only some of it has arrived so far. Besides, there tends to be one global price that everybody pays, more or less, because oil is easily transportable and freely traded. In open markets such as the United States, nobody can hoard supply in order to lower prices.Trump and other world leaders could try to ease the crunch by releasing oil from strategic reserves, but that didn’t do much to lower prices during the Biden years in 2022, when gas prices hit $5 per gallon. Plus, the US reserve remains depleted. Trump also eased some sanctions on Russian oil that went into place after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. That adds a bit to supply, at the cost of excusing Russia’s barbaric aggression.The best move for Trump, and for American drivers, would be an end to the war that allows Middle East oil to start moving again. Trump says the war is “won,” but “not won enough,” which suggests the strait might open by … well, nobody knows. Headline CPI rose 0.3% month over month after 0.2% in January, while the year-over-year rate held at 2.4%. Core CPI rose 0.2% on the month, down from 0.3% in January, and core annual inflation was unchanged at 2.5%. The <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/11/cpi-inflation-report-february-2026.html" target='__blank'>clean takeaway</a> is that inflation was broadly stable before the bigger March energy shock tied to the Iran conflict became the market’s main obsession. Depending on the source, the year-over-year headline print was either exactly in line or a touch cooler than expected, but in practical terms this landed right in the “nothing to see here, keep moving” bucket. <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/cpi.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com" target='__blank'></a>The headline details fit that interpretation. Shelter rose 0.2% and remained the largest contributor to the monthly increase, food rose 0.4%, and energy increased 0.6%. Core inflation was helped by softer categories including communication, used cars and trucks, motor vehicle insurance, and personal care. That mix matters because it showed offsetting forces underneath the surface: higher energy and food kept headline inflation from improving further, while several goods and insurance-type categories leaned disinflationary enough to keep core from reaccelerating. <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/cpi.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com" target='__blank'></a>On the upside, the biggest drivers were fairly straightforward. Energy turned positive in February, rising 0.6% after falling 1.5% in January, with gasoline up 0.8% on a seasonally adjusted basis and natural gas up 3.1%. Food also firmed, with the overall food index up 0.4%, food at home up 0.4%, and food away from home up 0.3%. Shelter added another 0.2%, and within core, medical care rose 0.5%, apparel jumped 1.3%, airline fares increased 1.4%, and household furnishings and operations rose 0.3%. So while the market narrative is now dominated by March oil, there was already enough late-February energy firmness to show up in the report. On the downside, there were enough cooler categories to prevent the report from becoming a problem. Core CPI slowed to 0.2% month over month, helped by a 0.4% decline in used cars and trucks, a 0.3% drop in motor vehicle insurance, a 0.5% decline in communication, and a 0.2% decline in personal care. Shelter also contained some good news beneath the surface: rent rose just 0.1%, the smallest monthly increase since January 2021, while owners’ equivalent rent increased 0.2%. New vehicle prices were flat. In other words, the “sticky inflation won’t die” crowd did not get much fresh ammunition here. Inflation is still above the Fed’s target, but it did not worsen in February. <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/cpi.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com" target='__blank'></a>That is why this report is unlikely to move the needle much for the Federal Reserve. The Fed’s target is based on PCE, not CPI, and policymakers were already expected to stay on hold at the March meeting. CME FedWatch continues to frame the upcoming meeting as overwhelmingly likely to result in no change. The broader issue is timing: February data largely predates the full inflation impulse from the March jump in oil and broader commodity stress tied to the Iran conflict. Fed officials are unlikely to react to one report that was stable before the real geopolitical pass-through has even had time to land. <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com" target='__blank'></a>That also explains the muted market reaction. We saw only minor moves in stock futures after the release, with investors treating the data as expected and keeping their focus on oil, geopolitics, and the path of rates from here. Brent crude was still trading around $91 a barrel after the release, and that matters more for the near-term inflation outlook than this backward-looking CPI print. Markets are effectively saying: nice to know February was stable, but March and April are where the real test begins. <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/snapshot-wall-st-futures-inch-lower-after-february-inflation-data-2026-03-11/?utm_source=chatgpt.com" target='__blank'></a>The next checkpoints now become more important than todays report. PPI, the University of Michigan survey, and especially PCE will all be watched for confirmation on whether inflation pressures are broadening or staying contained. But even there, investors may treat the next round of data as somewhat dated if it does not fully capture the energy and shipping effects of the Iran shock. Reuters noted that economists expect stronger core PCE than the CPI report alone might imply because of differences in category weights and earlier services data. That means the inflation story is not dead, just deferred. <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/us-consumer-prices-increase-expected-february-2026-03-11/?utm_source=chatgpt.com" target='__blank'></a>The big picture is that February CPI gave the market permission to avoid overreacting. Energy did push higher and likely contributed to the firm headline print, but deflationary pressure in several core categories kept the report from turning into a hawkish surprise. The Fed still looks set to remain on hold in March, and expectations for the path beyond that have not shifted much because policymakers need more information. Until March and April data arrive, investors are left where they started: watching oil, watching the Strait of Hormuz, and waiting for fresher inflation evidence. Glamorous stuff.
